  • New homepage administrators
C-D and FU are working on the homepage now.I'm sure something good will come out of this, and if not, you can enter a netPanzer game and "try" to destroy their tanks, but beware... you might not be successful in killing them.

  • NetPanzer 0.8.2
After years of waiting, broken pipes, illegal exceptions, cores and needed shutdowns, the netPanzer team is proud to present the release of netPanzer 0.8.2Hi, I'm kromxp (again), and as you can see (in the previous news) I'm the new maintainer, I should be writing the news from now on.This version fix many of the problems that made netPanzer crash. I still haven't write a full changelog, but you can get an idea by reading the SVN logSome of the changes include posibility of configuring the starting units, remove duplicated names (it will add a number after the name if there is a player with that name) and the player flags now are not duplicated and doesn't change (before the flags of one player could change when a new player joined the game)We now have 3 masterservers managed by 3 different people:masterserver.netpanzer.orgmasterserver2.netpanzer.orgmasterserver.netpanzer.infoWe have a forum, where we pass the days kicking the spambots. You can come there and help us kicking them while we speak about the future of netpanzer. Also if you have any problem with the game, you can post there and hopefully someone will help you.In the forum we can give support in English, German and Spanish. We created boards for other languages (like French and Portuguese) but we still don't have anyone to answer on those boards. You are invited to join the forum and if you want a board in your language (to help people in your language), you can ask!!!If you use IRC you can meet us (and idle with us) in #netpanzer in freenode.net, note that IRC is not for the faint of heart, you could join and ask, and the answer could be delayed (say 2 hours, thats the magic of real time communication)Abitos has been improving his server browser and now is back and running, you can find it here. It can filter servers (full, empty, old servers), generate the minimap images directly from map files, and has a better catching of the servers.Lohengrin maintains netpanzer.info community. There you can find, new maps for download, a heavy modified server browser (based on previous versions of the server browser) and the most interesting is the ranking, will you be able to get to the top on his list?During the testing phase, we have been forcing Cellar-Door to play with newer versions, but he is still alive, so we thought is time to releaseAnd the last note, even if this version is new for your, it is old for me, there are many changes already done for next version (0.9) not included in 0.8.2To get the new version, go to the Download section

  • New Maintainer
As I don't have the time for continued development on netpanzer anymore, I decided to pass over maintainership to kromxp. I wish him good luck and hope to see some new exciting netpanzer versions.

  • Develpment status
Hi! I'm kromxp, a new developer of Netpanzer. In the past two weeks there has been many changes in the code. It seems to be more stable now, i created a server and run for 11 hours, 114 players connected (not at the same time) and many of the 'disconected' players was for an expected reason (see the known problems #1) and there were no server crash (maybe not your case). I think is time to release a test version so more people can check the advances done. For Linux only source code is available, but in Windows, as it is more difficult to compile, I provide a binary update.Changes in the development version Server browser The selected server will be highlighted in yellow It will query all the masterservers configured in the .ini files It will try several times to query the servers, if they timeout Won't query/update the masterservers list received from masterserver, must be done by hand Under some conditions pressing the 'refresh' button wouldn't refresh the games list, now should be fixed Stops the query of servers when join one As it has been highly rewritten some other problems should be fixed, yet some new could appear Networking All the networking is event based now, and handled in only one thread Proxy functions haven't been updated to new networking model and are not working Heartbeat doesn't unregister from the masterserver when the game quits, it will be removed automatically when it timeouts Compatible with current netpanzer version Slash (\) character is removed from player and server names (it has special meaning in the server query) When a player is disconected from the server, a window will appear to go back to main menu (no crash/hang) Fixed a bug where it was possible to kick other players Fixed a bug where it was possible to connect or create servers with empty names Fixed a bug in Windows when playing in fullscreen and switching between applications would make the colors to become wrong (thanks to Cellar Door for the report), the problem didn't happen in the old version. The only change related to video is the using of newer SDL library in the Windows version. Added timestamps to all the logs Added possibility to configure starting units, there is a new section in the configuration files spawnconfigKnown problems Players may disconect if their send buffer is full (in the client or in the server) Pathing should be rewritten It has been reported (not verifyed) that on Windows XP with a 64 bit CPU the server uses too much CPU (near 100%) and makes tanks move very slowlyThe next step is to fix the problem of sending buffer, but it will require some time. Pathing will be next.To configure the starting units, start netpanzer in normal or dedicated server mode, then quit. Edit the netpanzer.ini or netpanzer-dedicated.ini and the new section should be there spawnconfig. Just modify the number of tanks of each type and next time you start a server all the players joining the server will start with that number of units. Note that it is the server who decides what number of units of each type are created. In current state, when there are many units in the game, the server could be slow, and players could be easy to disconect. It would be advisable to keep the number of units per player not to high, around 50 each 'should' be ok.The update is available in the Download section

  • NetPanzer 0.8.1
Thanks to Karl Bastiman from amber.org.uk who provides new hosting for the netpanzer masterserver! I also created a small bugfix release whose main intention is to set the default masterserver to netpanzer.dyndns.org. If you can't see any games in the ingame server browser, please change your masterservers setting netpanzer.ini to netpanzer.dyndns.org Change default masterserver to netpanzer.dyndns.org Fix remote DOS when sending invalid frame number (yes, this fixes this "security advisory" by Luigi Auriemma) Fix gcc 4.1 compilation Make server handle clients more gracefully that drop during connectPlease understand that I have no time to create (and test/debug) any binary packages for this new release.

  • Development situation and Masterserver
Well it's 2007 and unfortunately, there is still noone with sufficient (or any) C++ skills around who wants to take over the project. (Well I got an offer from a company making money with webgames, but I didn't want them to make money with stuff we created for our fun)Even worse I just got notice from Christian Reiss who kindly provided a rock solid and reliable hosting for the masterserver in the last years that he plans to deactivate my account in february to make room for projects in active development. So I would urgently need a new host for the masterserver. It would just need some linux, bsd or solaris box with a user login where I can setup a cron job and have the server running on port 28900.
