- Description
- Evaluation

The mapping contest is over
The Mappingcontest is over Finally, the contest has ended and the winners have been chosen. We've been surprised, but before we tell you about the winners, we'll give you a list of the jury members. The jury was: -Pudding -Chaosblubbel -Haferschleim -The_Brain -Harmonieman -Pixelmännchen First, we'll show you the maps that got to the fifth, sixth and seventh place. "Dacharena" (Nasbit), "Kontestmap" (Gubba) and "the_match" (Nicklas2751). The "Dacharena" has a World of Padman style colour scheme. Everything is very colourful. The block design isn't too good, and the close corridors don't help the gameplay. Sometimes the map reminds me of a labyrinth, so it takes a while to know how to get around. Gubba's "Kontestmap" is clear; it's just a room with four walls. In the middle is a tower and there is a base on either end of the room, which spans the whole wall. The weapon selection isn't big and in every base there is a health station and padshield, so you are ahead, if you are the one that fragged first. The Jump pads are a bit inaccurate so you can't hide well. "The_match", from Nicklas2751, uses all the weapons (except the imperius) in each of the two bases. You can get into a small room through a tunnel, in which you can fight each other. A door that you shoot to open, is a real spoilsport, like the small room, where you have to fire two balloons so that you and your opponent are eliminated. Congratulations to GLL for fourth place. He gave us a space map, that he called just "1vs1_DM17". The lights on the stairs give a nice feeling, like The_Brain said "It gives you the feeling that you are an important person ". The map is really colourful and has a large range of weapons. The map is symmetrical, so there's a base on each side. It may be a bit too colourful and you can't see the jump pads well. Edges, that prevent one from falling down too easily, would be nice, as well. Hana-bi got the third place, with a simple marble map. Sadly, the jump pads are difficult to see, but there is lots of detail. The Balloony is the primary weapon, that helps to play in small passages, but disturbs the enemy. There's no health station in the upper area, but a padshield instead. The hiding spots are quite dangerous and often lead to death. The map is well-lit, without any obvious light sources. The last two contestants had a hard fight. They scored the same points for their look, but one of them dominated in the gameplay. We can greet Phobos to the top of the winning stairs, who convinced the jury of his "Döner" map (it's something to eat in Germany, similar to a wrap.) But before that, we want to tell you about oregano's 1v1 map. It is divided into floors. The weapons Splasher, Betty, Pumper and Balloony are all there. The health stations are distributed uniformly and there is neither a jumppad, nor a teleporter. In the middle is a tube, filled with water. You can find a betty and ammo inside. There are no annoying edges and corners, that could disrupt the gameplay. The padshield and padshards aren't distributed well, because they are together with a Pumper and a health station on the upper floor. This makes it easy for the one spawning at the top to win. So now, we come back to the winning map. Phobos was the only one, who built an over-sized map, in the style of World of Padman. You're in a kitchen of a wrap store. On the floor is a cabinet and a ketchup tube. On the cabinet is the kebab skewer and a lot of vegetables, to fill your wrap with. It's being grilled at the moment. At the top is a shelf with a bubble g, a padshield and a health station. The other padshield is in the cabinet on the floor. The fight concentrates on the floor and everyone is searching for the padshield at the start, so the one who gets both is ahead. Congrats to every winner. You can download the maps here. Stay cool, keep mapping

1v1 Mapping contest
At this time there are a lot of mappers in the WoP Forum, especially new ones. This is why there will be a mapping contest. The aim of the contest is to create a map which can be played in a 1 on 1 tournament. The contributions should be visually attractive, with good playability. Details make your map more vivid and you should also included some good ambush positions. It doesn't matter if the map is a space map like Padcrash or an oversized map like Padlibrary as long as the map isn't too big (so that it takes too long to find the opponent). Powerups (Floater, etc.) are forbidden, as with the Imperius, which doesn't make sense in a 1 on 1. The winning map will be played in the final of a forthcoming 1 on 1 cup. This cup will be played in normal mode. We will wait 3 days, and if there aren't 5 registrations yet, the cup will be restarted a few days later. Register today for the mapping contest by pm to "Pixelmännchen" in the WoP-Forum. The contest will end in 2 weeks at 4pm GMT-5 (10pm GMT+1).

Clanforum in the WoP-Forum
A new update is available in the WoP-Forum now, because here you can find a new Clan-Treff-Forum. It is placed in the [Pad]Community area. You can get the latest events like Clancups or new memberships there. A list of all current Clans is also available. Furthermore, it is possible to ask for a membership at a clan, or if you even have a clan, you can search for new members. To always have the latest clan, you should watch in the forum if you are the leader, so you don't miss nothing important. You can only visit the forum as a registered member in the WoP-Forum. To do that, register here.

Padday
In the last time, the Padday has become quite a frequent event and of course we dont want this to change. Therefore a Padday is - after a two-weak break - going to be played again on this Sunday at 7:00 pm GMT. This time, we will mainly be playing on classic maps and on the server called Padday which is provided by Hectic. Further information can be found on the forum (unfortunately this thread exists only in the German section). For those of you who might not quite understand what Im talking about: a Padday is simply an event for which we meet at a certain time on a certain server to have some fun and some frags. Alright, as said before: Sunday, April 25th 7:00 pm GMT (8:00 pm CET, 1:00 pm CST) Be there!

Painted Death music pack re-release
Nicola Capecci aka Neurological added two new tracks to his WoP music pack "Painted Death" and re-released it this week. Now it has 9 complete tracks. The new songs "Respawn" and "Water Horizon" fits very well with the album concept and ensures a strong mix of Metal and Hardrock. To update the pack simply download it again and overwrite the old version in your WoP sub-directory. Download music pack! | Listen music online! Meanwhile, Neurological was able to provide a soundtrack for his very first commercial project Dark Salvation. We congratulate him on this opportunity and hope to hear more of his work in other commercial projects soon. If there will be a WoP Soundtrack CD in future definitely some of his tracks will be part of the album.

John Carmack gets award for his life's work
I think only a few of you know the name John Carmack, but without his work on the Quake engine, and the co-foundation of id Software, WoP would not exist. Additionally he worked on the Doom and Wolfenstein 3D engines and he soon will set the cat among the pigeons with Rage. For exactly that he will get the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's Game Developers Choice Awards in San Francisco. The award will be given to him on March 11th, 2010. Meggan Scavio, the Event Director of the Game Developers Conference said: "It's no exaggeration to say that John Carmack and id Software have had a monumental influence on all modern 3D games, but especially the first-person shooter genre. John is one of the key figures in the history of video games, and we're delighted to be giving him the Lifetime Achievement award this year.

Finally a new coder joined the team
PadWorld Entertainment is slowly waking up from hibernation and WoP 2.0 development gathered some momentum lately. We're not yet going full speed, but at least we're yawning and stretching. This is mainly due to the latest member that joined the team, who's currently settling in and started on some UI tasks already. Our new programmer is well known to the community, it is The Brain. He has contributed to and was involved in several community projects, so we had no doubt about his skills. His applied a couple month ago, but it took us quite a while to bring ourselfes to make the commitment. Now we made up our minds and are happy that he was patient and kept his enthusiasm. The Brain has a couple last multiplayer tasks on his plate, and afterwards will help up push forward the singleplayer.

Pad Day
Finally the time has come again: on this Sunday, February 21st at 8:00 pm CET, a Pad Day is going to be played. We are going to play CTF, but also other custom maps will be present. Some of them are Sahas Flat, Phobosroom, the Monkroom Map and Oreganos Plane. In case you dont have those, you can download them on the forum or if you want to have it easy - just set autodownload on under Setup -> Options before connecting to the server. The Server which is going to be played on is named "CTFmod v1.0" and provided by haferschleim. Alright, as said before: Sunday, February 21st 8:00 pm CET (7:00 pm GMT; 1:00 pm CST) Be there!

Padbabs's Monkroom Map
For a long time, Padbabs has been working on his map, and has amazed us again and again with screens that he showed from time to time that made the suspense rise more and more. Now finally the beta version of his map is available for download! What has resulted from his long work, is a digital reproduction of his own room, in which you can like in the Padmaps romp around, hardly the size of a mouse, and frag each other joyfully. It can be easily played with two dozen Pads, as it offers an unbelievable amount of space. You can choose between fighting next to the huge flat screen TV, on the writing desk, the armchair, in one of the shelves, or even just stay on the floor. Also Padbabs shows great attention to detail. In one corner, there is guitar in the shape of the WoP logo, on the shelves there are the Christmas Carols by Charles Dickens and a Monk DVD. On the desk is a camera created only of brushwork and most of all, the sprayroom, which is in the interior of a church, is not to be missed. The map is available for download here.

Oregano's Plane
One Sunday evening, oregano4 surprised us with his brand new airplane map. Yes, a real airplane map with a realistic cockpit, seats for the passengers, and even playable overhead containers. Those who love details will find them in this map. For instance, there are numerous colourful buttons and displays in the cockpit, the spray tunnel flashes very colourfully, and the spray room the interior of a fridge is an artwork in itself. Altogether its a fabulous map, thats why there isnt much more to write about it. You can download the map here.

The Brains new server tutorial
A while ago, our forum-user, player, and now also freelancer, The Brain created a new, detailed tutorial in which he explains everything worth knowing about creating your own dedicated WoP-server. Be aware, though that it is explained using the Linux operating system and that advanced computer skills are required. Well, there isnt much more to say about this, so if you want to run a dedicated WoP-server, but don't know how, you can find the tutorial here.

The Wiesels Custommap Video
There aren't many WoP videos made by the WoP community. But, in mid-December, a new video was made by The Weasel, in which he puts ingame-video scenes of his four maps (Blockcity, Skatefest, Hobbyroom und Laboratory) together in one nice video-clip. For that purpose, he looked for a few "extras" who play with him on the maps and each of them has recorded his game and sent it to The Weasel. He accompanied these sequences with a suitable song and put them together into a very well done motion picture. If you want to have a look at the video yourself, you can watch it on Youtube.com. In case, you want to make a video or something similar, just ask the community whether anyone wants to help you or unite with someone else and produce your own videos.

A Happy New Year!
A new year is upon us and we admit that 2009 wasn't really the year of "World of Padman". Many things didn't quite work out the way we planned because of private reasons or "staff shortage". We intentionally backed off a little after we realized that 2009 wasn't the year of WoP 2.0 and there wasn't as much as we had hoped happening behind the WoP curtains. Still, you guys managed to keep things going with custom maps and other contributions. We appreciate that you stuck with us although we didn't deliver a release this year and couldn't tell you everything about WoP 2.0 that we were cooking up secretly, since we want to make sure it's a fresh experience once it is released. We are convinced, however, that the year 2010, which also stands for 10 years of PadMaps, will be a good year for WoP. We didn't give up, although there were some obstacles along our way. We have a vision and we want to share this vision with you. The WoP team is eager to get things started again and hopefully supply you with regular news about new features. We would like to thank all of you for being a fantastic community and it's always a pleasure to see what you have added to the game. Happy New Year! May it be a nice and healthy one with lots of WoP. Your WoP team

ModDB MotY 2009 Awards already started
A few days ago ModDB.com announced their annual Mod of the Year Awards. Again, like previous years the event will proceed in three phases. Phase one has already started and runs until January 5th of 2010, you are able to nominate your favourite game mods and independent games titles of 2009 for the Top 100 Players Choice list. To do so, simply click on the vote button of a game or a mod profile. In phase two, starting from January 6th to January 21st of 2010, you can vote for your top 3 nominees out of the Top 100 Players Choice list. In early February, phase three of the event will showcase the Players and Editors Choice winners of 2009. Again, due to the delay of WoP 2.0 and as written down in the event rules we won't make it into the Top 100 Players Choice list, even if we would have enough votes. That's why we ask you to pay more attention to the released mods for World of Padman like the X-Mas WoP mod. Check out the WoP mods list and if you want your mod listed there, simply add it. We are sure the upcoming Mod of the Year Awards of 2009 will be exceptional, even without World of Padman. Prepare to vote your favourite mods and games.

2009 X-Mas mod for WoP released.
Another year, still no WoP 2.0. But a new version of the X-Mas mod to save the day! (And maybe year, at least the month.) We could even call it X-Mas WoP 2.0, but the X-Mas team really is not organized enough to have any version numbers for the mod. The mod changes several things in World of Padman to a Christmas themed version adding several Christmas hats, item models, music, some skins, spraylogos, menu changes and a freezetag gamemode. To install the mod, just extract the xmas folder into your World of Padman directory. If you still have the old version of the mod you can remove that before the installation. We got a new board
Word on WoP 2.0 is still very low, but we always keep the community and the things beside the development on the game in mind and that's why we have worked on the forum. This is an all new board, based on new board-software. There are multiple reasons for this change, but security issues of the old board and a better admin-panel on the new one are the main ones. Big thanks go to smiley, who converted the old database to fit to the new forum. He also build the theme, which is now looking nearly like the old one, so that everyone should feel well in our new home.

6 questions to a PadMember: Smiley
After a long break we go on with our PadMember interviews and now it's Smiley's turn. He is no longer a real Padmember, but anyway, he did a lot for the World of Padman. Read on: Reporter: Tell us something about yourself. Smiley: Err, I should tell something about myself. Well I'm the Smiley (some actually call me Dennis), I'm 32 years old and live in the middle of the beautiful county of Hesse (a state in Germany). I work as an IT-administrator and alternatively as a handyman in the shipping trade. So I work with funny things like GPS-navigation (like "tomtom-work", "google-maps", "fleetec" etc.), scheduler-software, forklift driving etc. Ohh and I'm building a new website for my company ? may I post a link here? Oh no, it would be covert advertising R: How did you get your nickname? S: My nickname is easy to explain: Just have a look on the team-page. A friend called me Smiley ages ago (around 1992) and since then I am known and called by this nick. To describe it without pictures: I'm (nearly) always in a good mood which seems to be inborn as an Aquarius. R: How did you come to WoP and since when were you a part of the team? S: Actually I know and play WoP since the first PadMaps. We played a lot on LAN back then (due to a lack of an internet connection). I've been active since about 2006 here in the forum, though I was a real Padmember since I presented the first version of my WoP-Server-Browser and offered to build a whole new website. Or was it since I recommended the team to build an installer for the Quake 3 padmod to get more people playing? (Installing WoP for Quake 3 was really difficult) R: What's your job in the team? S: Because no one of the team has the time, mood or know-how to deal with web-programming and administration this task seems to be mine. Unfortunately I'm not very talented with mapping and modding otherwise I could have brought something like this in the World of Padman. R: What are you mostly proud of (at WoP). S: You are right looking at it. Yes, I mean this website ? has got style, eh? Ok, sadly I have not finished it (I left the team because of some difference in opinions before it was completed) - but nevertheless I am totally proud of it because so many people visited the page - have a look at the counter. By the way, I've got something new and as far as the team is interested, there soon will be an update. Further things like the Windows-Installer or some ingame ideas like running faster with the Punchy also came from me. R: What can we await from you in the future (at WoP)? S: As I already mentioned, maybe a new website and maybe even a new Windows-Installer; we'll see what time brings.

Attention! Community board in the works [update]
Some of you may recognized that something is going on with the community board. This is due to Smiley working hard on the database and the board software to bring it up to date. Please be patient and don't be sad if you find the board in maintain mode or completely offline. We hope to reanimate the board very soon. [update] OK, the community board is available again and you are able to log in. Please notice that there will be changes during the next days/weeks and don't panic because of the used standard layout. We will replace it with something more suitable soon. Also we will review some of the old board content so if you're having issues or missing stuff please drop us a line. Now go checking out the new board software and update your account data.

X-Mas mod Update
Winter comes every year at nearly the same time. And because Christmas is the highlight of this season, doomdragon and PaulR started to integrate the pre-Christmas atmosphere into the World of Padman last year. On the 1st of December 2008 they released the Christmas mod. Within the next few weeks dozens of people played this mod on the X-Mas server with lots of snow and pads with funny hats. So, hopefully Winter comes with lots of snow again this year, we can't control that. We can control the second edition of the Christmas-mod though! Doomdragon called the community-members about a week ago up to create maps, models, code, or whatever you can make for a second edition of the X-mas mod. Of course, the completed parts of the last version will be used, as well as some parts that didn't make it into the mod last year, like the freeze-tag-bot support. The map "Pad Crash" is now in Christmasy colours and there is a drawing of a pumper alternative that may be used in the mod. If you now want to contribute something to the mod as well, you can announce it here in the forum. In any case we wish you much fun, both modders and players, with the upcoming version of the mod.

Mister Phobos Phosphor!
Reporter: How old are you? Phobos: Eighteen! Reporter: When did you start playing WoP and how did you find it? Phobos: Well ... I think it must have been in the year 2006, as I tried the PadMod. But there was no server, so I played against the bots:>. How I found WoP? I was looking for some custom maps for Quake 3 Arena and found the "PadKitchen," which was created for Quake 3. ENTE posted some screenshots of his padmaps in the planetquake.de-editing forum, and I saw that these maps were not for Quake 3 when I downloaded some of them, and tried to play them in Quake 3 . I saw nothing but missing textures, so I loaded the whole modification:> Reporter: At the time, do you think, you were able to call yourself a part of the community? Phobos: What do mean with "at the time"? As I tried the mod, or as I posted the first screens of my room-map? Reporter: At the time when you tried the modification. Phobos: No, no then. Phobos: As WoP was released on the first of April, I think I was the first one, who tried the standalone. I got on Harm's nerves to get the download link. I think it was at 3 o'clock PM that I could download the standalone... Sure, at first I was all about making it but I somehow stopped from lack of desire to play. I then came to play again, when I was a beta tester for WoP 1.2. Reporter: Ok, but now we may no longer see you as a community member, you may take more of a place of pride in the community as a mapper, or how do you see it? Phobos: It's a matter of opinion, but if you get offered a place of honour you won't say no. In principle, everyone was supposed to get a place as an honourary member for WoP, who has campaigned for the community. WoP is ready for an award from the GamesCon, from my perspective. I mean, each member of WoP basically sacrificed his spare time and needs to, just so we can have a good time. And they helped to develop such a community. Reporter: What do you imagine concerning WoP 2.0? Phobos: Obviously a single player mode, which references it to other games like Tomb Raider and Duke Nukem, and their distinctive maps in an arena, then you attempt to defeat them . But I know that this is too much work and I can understand the whole team will be happy if WoP 2.0 is released. I know it from my own art, if you draw at a picture for several days, I will get fed up with it and just can not see it anymore. I believe it is the same with the developersand their stuff. But I also hope WoP continues to live by the community and that there will always be new maps, mapobjects, player models, music packs and mods created by the community. Reporter: Tell me briefly about yourself. Phobos: What can I say, my past 7-10 class was just influenced by my illness :\. I was an outsider for a long time. But it has changed now, as I was looking for (and even found!) new friends. Like the community has seen, I like drawing and mapping, if I may say so :>. Mapping has also became a passion and I am working at the moment with modeling for mapobjects. I am now attending grade 11 in secondary school and try my final secondary-school examinations somehow to study later art & graphic, and then switch to game design Reporter: What do you like most about WoP? Phobos: At WoP, I like just the detail. Who would not know the posters that are available from the doctor? Where are certain objects, such as the hedgehog, frog, or the red ball? These were full of detail, and detail reflects the reality for me. But in general I may say: the maps, sounds and textures:> Reporter: Have you ever contributed anything to World of Padman? Phobos: I think I've made sure that the old Kai-Li Tutorial is back, so it is available to save mapobject catalogue. I put together the mappack with a little help from Brain as well. I also helped at the beginning of the community and took part in the beta test of the 1.2 patch. :S Well, and a couple of maps, from helping people and the times of which I played WoP, in ICQ. But no more:

Rent your own Server - for free
Who of you never wanted to create a game-server for a match, but then failed in establishment and administration? Since, for people who are not typing on the keyboard like Mozart is playing the piano, it is rather difficult to set up a server, there is now the option to rent a fully functional server with high speed Internet connection, good pings, and up to 12 slots - and all that for free. To do this you can use the site of CoreFusion to register and apply for one of the servers for one hour a week and 7 days ahead. If you then have chosen a time, the "rcon"-password (remote control) and all other details will be sent to you by e-mail. At the moment the offer is still in the testing phase, but it already works well and the first bookings (called "bookies"), are also done yet. So, if you want to duel with another clan or another player, or just want to be your own boss for an hour, this is not longer a problem. We, the Community reporters wish you lots of fun while testing and playing the offer and hope that you are playing some nice rounds.
